Math and English essentials
Silkwood has developed The Silkwood Way, an educational approach that places individual student learning plans at the centre and uses student interest, innovative learning styles, flexible timetables and the Australian Curriculum to intentionally enhance every child’s learning adventure.
Silkwood has taken the Australian Curriculum Math and English outcomes and designed the Silkwood Maths and English Learning Continuum. In this continuum we have identified the critical learning blocks needed for students to be able to develop mastery over English and Math concepts.
This learning continuum is used by the teachers to work alongside students to develop individualised Math and English learning plans for each student. They are specifically targeted to effectively progress a student along the continuum and focus on the mastery of the critical learning blocks. The teaching program for each year level is then developed around the individual student learning plans using a model which includes an ‘additional’ specialist Maths and English teacher or Teacher Aids. This is delivered most days in two learning blocks of around one hour each.
For this learning program we support students to develop mastery over the explicit learning concepts in the Maths and English learning continuum by using:
- instructional teaching style
- relevance to real life use
- a range of independent learning processes that are the most effective for each student and
- a growth mindset approach.
Each student is responsible for progressing their learning goals through applying their best effort. A mixture of formative, summative and student self-assessment processes are used to identify mastery.
