Silkwood School Mother's Day Reflection
A Mother’s Day Reflection by Silkwood School Founder and CEO, Valerie Campbell-Hogg
Today, we gather to celebrate something deeply woven into the fabric of Silkwood: the spirit, strength, and love of motherhood. At Silkwood, motherhood is not something we acknowledge only once a year. It sits at the very heart of who we are and why this community exists.
Silkwood began from my own journey as a mother. It grew from a deep desire to create a learning environment for my children that honoured their childhood, empowered their youth, and kept their natural love of learning alive.
A place where dreaming, learning, and life were deeply connected, where young people could keep their hearts open to the wonder and possibility of the world around them.
This is the Silkwood Vision: a mother’s dream for a better world for her children.

A Vision Born From Love
It was not born from theory, strategy, or a single moment of inspiration. It came from love, from instinct, and from the belief that there could be a more human, connected, and empowering way for young people to grow and learn at school.
A mother’s love became the foundation of The Silkwood Way.
That dream has taken me on a thirty-year journey. It began with my two beautiful daughters walking the early Silkwood path beside me. Together, as a family, we navigated the challenges, the uncertainty, the risks, and the hope that comes with trying to build something different.
The first ten years were incredibly difficult. We had very limited funds, and much of my work was voluntary. There was also a constant tension between the deeper Silkwood vision and the Steiner approach we were working within at the time.
This made it difficult for the whisperings of the vision to flourish and find its own form.
The Evolution of The Silkwood Way
Then, in 2009, we made the decision to become Silkwood School and create our own learning model aligned fully to our vision. That decision opened the path forward.
From that moment, the dream slowly evolved into what we now know as The Silkwood Way.
And I am very proud to say that, just this week, in time for Mother’s Day, I completed the full documentation of The Silkwood Way Vision into a fully realised educational approach. A mother’s love carried through a thirty-year journey to bring a dream to life.
A Legacy Across Generations
Now, as a grandmother, I have the privilege of watching the Silkwood dream continue into another generation for my family. Watching my grandchildren grow, and seeing my daughter now walk the Silkwood golden path herself as a mother, deepens my understanding of just how powerful motherhood truly is.
There is something profoundly hopeful in that continuity of motherhood, in supporting not only our children, but also the dreams they hold for their own children.
Because motherhood, at its heart, carries a vision of the future. It holds hope for a kinder, more peaceful, and more empowering world, and a commitment to nurturing young people who can help create it. This wisdom is something we also see deeply reflected in Indigenous cultures, where motherhood is connected to belonging, identity, community, and relationship with Country.
There is great wisdom in recognising that raising a child is never only about the individual. It is about helping young people understand their connection to others, to place, and to the world they will one day help shape.
Honouring Mothers
So this morning, we pause to honour that.
We honour the mothers who came before us, whose love, wisdom, courage, and care helped shape a better world for future generations.
We honour the mothers of today who continue to hold hope for a kinder and more peaceful future while navigating the complexities of motherhood in an ever-changing world.
And we honour the strength, care, belief, and vision that each of you brings, not only to your own children, but to this entire community and the future we are building together.
You are the ones who notice, who guide, who listen, who encourage, and who walk alongside your children as they grow into young adults.
The Partnership We Share
At Silkwood, we often speak about growing tomorrow’s leaders, young people with voice, agency, courage, and a deep sense of self. But this is only possible because of the partnership we share with you.
You bring the relational strength, the love, and the belief that allows young people to flourish.
So thank you, Silkwood mums, for being part of this journey and for the role you play in shaping tomorrow’s world. The Silkwood vision continues to live every day through all of you, through your care, your hope, and your mother’s love.
This morning is a small but heartfelt way of saying thank you all for the role you play not only in your own child’s life, but in the life of this entire community.
Thank you for the way you hold, guide, and nurture not only your own children, but the future we are creating together.
I feel deeply honoured that you have chosen the Silkwood learning adventure for your children and entrusted us to walk alongside your families in this journey.
In closing, I leave you with this as my gift for Mother’s Day: Let the power of your motherhood shine bright. Through love, courage, and unwavering belief, mothers help dreams grow into realities that can shape generations. And never forget the power of your dreams, for a mother’s dream can grow into something magical. Happy Mother’s Day 💛
