Middle School is a unique and important part of this journey. It is a time where young people are discovering who they are, what they stand for and the contribution they want to make.

Every learner is becoming. They are not defined by a single moment, challenge or achievement. They are growing through experiences, relationships, reflection and opportunities to step beyond what they already know.

This semester, our students will continue to engage in meaningful learning experiences through our Middle School Learning Model and 4 Learning Frames— Discovery, Essentials, Exploring, and Personal Interest Learning PILT— developing the knowledge, skills, character and confidence to navigate their own learning journey.

Through these experiences, students will be encouraged to:

• explore their interests and strengths;
• embrace challenge and build resilience;
• develop agency and ownership of their learning;
• connect learning to the real world; and
• find their voice and understand the impact they can have.

NAPLAN 2026 Insights - Evidence of The Silkwood Way in Action

At Silkwood, we believe learning is about far more than a test result. Our purpose is to develop young people who are curious, capable and confident - learners who understand themselves, find their voice and are equipped to thrive in an ever-changing world.

We also believe that evidence matters. It helps us understand how students are growing, celebrate success, identify where further support is needed, and continually strengthen our learning programs.

NAPLAN is one of the many measures we use to understand student progress. Alongside classroom learning, teacher observations, student voice, Essentials, PAT and other learning data, it provides an external benchmark that allows us to see how our students are progressing against Australian standards.

Our 2026 results demonstrate that The Silkwood Way successfully combines authentic, student-centred learning with strong academic outcomes. They show that when students are engaged in meaningful learning, supported by strong relationships and challenged through high expectations, they develop not only the knowledge and skills to succeed academically, but also the confidence, resilience and capability to apply their learning in meaningful ways.

Year 7 - Building Strong Foundations for Middle School Growth

Our Year 7 students have transitioned into Middle School with strong foundations, particularly in literacy, providing a positive platform for continued growth.

What this means for our learners:

Our Year 7 students are demonstrating:

• strong reading comprehension and engagement with texts
• confidence expressing ideas
• a positive transition into Middle School learning
• strong foundations for future growth

The data also helps us identify where we can continue to support students, including:

• strengthening spelling development
• building numeracy confidence and fluency
• extending students ready for greater challenge and complexity

Measuring Success: Growth Before Grades

At Silkwood, NAPLAN is one piece of a much bigger learning story.

We do not define success by a single assessment. We measure success through whether students:

• understand themselves as learners
• build confidence and independence
• make meaningful growth from their starting point
• find purpose and relevance in learning
• develop the capabilities needed for life beyond school

At the same time, strong benchmark outcomes matter.

They demonstrate that the Middle School and ‘The Silkwood Way’ delivers strong academic outcomes.

Semester 2 is shaping up to be an exciting time across Wellbeing and Learning Enrichment as we continue to strengthen the support available for every student and help each young person thrive.

This term, we're excited to open our new Wellbeing Hub - a calm, welcoming space designed to support students when they need a moment to regulate, reset or reconnect before returning to learning.

Our much-loved Chill space has moved into the Hub, and Jai, our Wellbeing Advisor, will be there throughout the day to provide check-ins, teach practical regulation strategies and support student wellbeing.

We're also delighted to welcome Fiona, our new Student Support Coordinator. Fiona has established our new Learning Hub, where students can access personalised learning support, build confidence and develop the skills they need for success. She works closely with students, families and teachers to ensure every learner is supported to achieve their personal best.

Our wellbeing learning continues to grow this term. Year 7 students will participate in Teen Mental Health First Aid, developing practical skills to recognise when a friend may need support and how to seek help from a trusted adult. Later in the term, our Year 8 and Year 9 students will take part in the Love Bites program, exploring respectful relationships, healthy communication and positive decision-making.

Our Learning Enrichment team will also continue to provide targeted support to help students make strong learning growth. Donna and Brooke will work with students in the MacqLit literacy intervention program, while Christie will support selected students to strengthen their reading comprehension. Students will also have opportunities to develop their creativity, problem-solving and design thinking through engaging Makers Empire projects.

Together, these initiatives reflect our commitment to The Silkwood Way - creating an environment where every student feels known, supported and empowered to learn courageously, grow in confidence and flourish on their learning adventure.

Term 3 is set to be another exciting chapter in our Middle School learning adventure, with students continuing to explore, innovate and thrive through authentic experiences beyond the traditional classroom.

Guided by our Middle School purpose, Adventuring with Life – Exploring who I am and what I stand for, our programs are designed to help students build confidence, resilience, curiosity and character while applying their learning in meaningful, real-world contexts.

Our Year 7 students will embark on their Emu Gully Adventure, challenging themselves through teamwork, leadership and resilience. Years 8 and 9 will continue preparing for their Whitsundays and Tasmanian Wilds expeditions through increasingly challenging Adventure Learning experiences that develop independence, problem-solving and perseverance.

Following their successful Noosa North Shore Adventure, our Year 6 students will extend their learning through a community project while continuing to strengthen teamwork, confidence and school spirit through Interschool Sport.

Students across Middle School will also begin preparing for our Entrepreneurial Showcase, with each year level exploring entrepreneurship through a unique lens—from social enterprise and community impact to innovation and business creation. These projects encourage students to apply creativity, critical thinking and collaboration to solve authentic challenges and create value for others.

For our Year 9 students, Term 3 marks an important step towards Senior School. As they prepare for Work Shadowing experiences, they will continue developing the professionalism, independence and confidence needed for future learning and career pathways. Connecting classroom learning with authentic workplace experiences helps students make informed decisions about the opportunities ahead.

Term 3 also brings an exciting sporting calendar, including Primary Interschool Sport, the Independent Schools Cup, our School Athletics Carnival, District Athletics for qualifying students and the return of our Oztag Championship team for a third consecutive year.

If I could offer each year level one piece of advice for making the most of Semester 2, it would be this:

• Year 6: Say yes to every opportunity that comes your way. Whether it's trying a new activity, taking on a challenge or learning a new skill, every experience is an opportunity to build confidence, discover new strengths and learn something about yourself and those around you.
• Year 7: As Emu Gully approaches, be willing to give everything a go. Embrace new challenges and remember that feeling uncomfortable isn't something to avoid—it's often a sign that you're learning, growing and becoming more capable than you thought possible.
• Year 8 - This is the semester to take greater ownership of your learning. Be curious, ask questions, take initiative and don't be afraid to try something that might not work the first time. Growth comes from having the courage to keep learning.
• Year 9: It's time to level up. Say yes to experiences that stretch you, whether that's leading others, stepping into unfamiliar situations or preparing for life beyond Middle School. The responsibility, initiative and curiosity you show now will create opportunities well beyond Year 9. Back yourself—you are more ready than you think.

This term sees the opening of our Learning Hub, located within the Year 6/7 building. The Learning Hub has been designed as a calm, welcoming space where students can access personalised learning support tailored to their individual needs. Whether students are consolidating key concepts, building confidence, or extending their learning, the Hub provides a focused environment where they can experience success, develop independence, and reach their full potential. This space will always have an Advisor or Teacher Aide while students access the space. During out trial at the end of last term, we had many students willingly wanting to work on their PILT and other learning with great success.

Unity Crew – Building Positive School Culture

We are also excited to launch the Unity Crew, a student-led initiative made up of 10–12 students representing all year levels across the Middle School (Yr 6-9).

The Unity Crew’s goal is to strengthen our school culture by promoting connection, kindness, and belonging. Our hope is that these values become student driven and will allow students to drive school wide events to promote inclusivity, create awareness campaigns, raise concerns, and form solutions supported by the Wellbeing team. Please keep an eye out for information on how your child can register interest in the coming weeks.

Attendance and Engagement

Every day at school provides opportunities that cannot always be replicated at home. Alongside academic learning, students develop friendships, confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging. Regular attendance helps children stay connected, build positive routines, and achieve their full potential.

Remember 90% is the Silkwood expectation.
