As Term 2 draws to a close, we look back on a season filled with adventure, discovery, and some truly memorable moments across our Silkwood community.

From the excitement of the Cardboard Challenge to overnight camps in Tyalgum, Trade Taster Days on the Gold Coast, and our first-ever Mother's Day breakfast at Robina, this term was rich with experiences that brought our students, families, and staff together. 

Time and again this term, we watched our students step outside their comfort zones, back themselves, and show up for each other. That spirit of courage, curiosity, and connection is what makes Silkwood such a special place to learn and grow.

This year, our Silkwood campuses came alive with warmth and connection as we celebrated the incredible motherly figures in our community. At our Mount Nathan campus, families enjoyed a special breakfast, arts and crafts, and a well-deserved pamper session for our Junior School Mums. At our Robina campus, we hosted our very first Mother's Day breakfast!

As our founder Valerie Campbell-Hogg beautifully put it: "Motherhood is not something we acknowledge only once a year - it sits at the very heart of who we are and why this community exists." It was that same spirit that shaped The Silkwood Way, and this year's celebrations were a beautiful reflection of that. Simple, meaningful moments shared with the people who matter most.

To all the mums, grandmothers, step-mums, carers, and nurturing souls who guided and cheered our students on every single day, thank you. Your love and presence meant the world to us.

Another year, another Cardboard Challenge! 

This year, Prep to Year 5 stepped into the roles of designers, inventors, and visionaries, armed with recycled cardboard, tape, and the kind of imagination that turns yesterday's boxes into something truly inspiring. From imaginative play in Prep to sustainable designs and future-thinking prototypes in Year 5, every year level brought their own lens. The results spoke for themselves: games with moving parts, robots, farms, vehicles, and even shopfronts stocked with ice creams and cupcakes.

What made it so special wasn't just the builds, but watching students take creative risks and persist through wobbly structures and peeling tape. Courage, innovation, connection, and respect were on full display.

The day wrapped up with a gallery walk, where creations lined the pathways and students shared the thinking behind their designs. A moment where learning became visible, valued, and shared.

A massive thank you to our advisors, parent helpers, and every family who collected boxes. Your involvement is what makes these moments truly special.

At Silkwood, we believe a student's school life should be rich with moments worth remembering, and the Winter Festival of Light is one of them.

Each term, we pause to mark the season. Not because it's on the calendar, but because we believe that slowing down, gathering, and celebrating the closing of a chapter is part of what makes a Silkwood education something students carry long after they leave.

As the sun set over the oval on the last day of Term 2, our whole community gathered for one of the most beloved nights on the Silkwood calendar. It began the way the best things do: softly. Lanterns moving through the dark, little hands carrying handmade light, voices rising together into the winter night. Prep through Year 5 filled the air with music and movement, each year level bringing something entirely their own to the story of the night.

During the interval, Senior students ran the food stalls and hosted a light-up fashion show, serving the community with warmth and a little flair. The festival was a showcase of what learning looks like at Silkwood. Creative, courageous, and filled with purpose.

Then, as the night deepened, the energy shifted. Our Senior Strings opened with a performance that set the tone for everything that followed. Year 6 took to the stage with drums they'd built themselves, and from there, the atmosphere transformed. Fire twirling stopped the crowd. Glowing poi and LED performances turned light into movement.

Light takes many forms here. It's a lantern carried by a five-year-old. It's a drum built from scratch. It's a student who steps into something that scares them and does it anyway.

From lanterns in little hands to flames catching the winter air, these are the moments we create deliberately at Silkwood. The Moments That Matter. The ones that live on in a young person's heart well beyond their school years.

There's something about the final year of school that asks more of a young person than ever before. More reflection, more responsibility, more awareness of the world waiting on the other side. At Silkwood School, we see the world as our campus, and for our Year 12 students this term, that campus was the heart of Australia. Because we believe some of the most important learning doesn't happen inside a classroom. It happens when students are placed in the world as it is, and asked to meet it with curiosity, respect, and an open mind.Each year, our Real-World Learning program takes students beyond the familiar and into experiences that challenge, connect, and shape them. For Year 12, the Red Centre journey has become the culminating experience of their Silkwood story.

This term, students travelled to one of the most ancient and significant landscapes on Earth. They tackled the Kings Canyon Rim Walk, visited the Karrke Cultural Centre, explored the Uluru Camel Farm, and covered the kind of long open roads that offer something increasingly rare - space to think and reflect.

Our Senior students caught a glimpse of their future at this year's Gold Coast Careers Festival, leaving with more clarity, curiosity, and the courage to dream bigger.

With hundreds of employers, educators, and industry professionals all under one roof, students were surrounded by possibility. Real people doing real work. Sharing what their careers actually look like, the paths that got them there, and what they wish they'd known earlier. Some discovered directions they'd never considered. Others found confirmation that the path they were already on felt right. And some simply left with bigger, bolder questions than they arrived with.

Term 2 in Senior School has been shaped by real-world learning and growth.

Our students have been earning university credits, landing traineeships, securing internships, and diving into real-world work experience across industries including Marine Biology, Construction Management and Animal Care. One even walked away as Employee of the Month at their very first placement.

Along the way, there has been plenty of space for creativity and connection too. From cooking up quesadillas to creating portraits at HOTA, making felt and immersing themselves in art therapy, students have continued exploring learning in many different forms. Our first group of Year 10 students also shared beautiful moments with residents at Villa Serena as part of our intergenerational program.

Our Year 9 students headed to Gold Coast Trades College for 2 Trade Taster Days.

Across Automotive and Construction, students got hands-on with everything from changing tyres and jacking up cars to working on engines, swinging hammers, and getting their first go on power tools like drop saws, jigsaws, and grinders.

Some discovered a new passion, some found out it's harder than it looks, and some figured out exactly what they don't want to do which is just as valuable.

At Silkwood School, we believe that real growth happens when students are given the opportunity to take what they've learned and test it in the real world. This term, two of our Year 11 TAFE students stepped onto a regional stage to compete at the WorldSkills Hospitality and Cookery Competition at TAFE Robina.

Nolan brought home Bronze in Cookery, and Cooper represented Silkwood in Front of House. Both brought composure, skill, and professionalism beyond their years. These are students who have chosen a path, committed to it, and shown up when it counted.

This is real-world learning at its finest, and it sits at the very heart of what we do at Silkwood. We don't just prepare students for a future, we help them step into it with confidence, capability, and a deep sense of who they are and what they have to offer. Congratulations Nolan and Cooper.

From open seas to sheltered shores, our senior students completed the South Passage sail trip. Five days of sunshine, rain, rough water, and everything in between. They navigated it all, literally and figuratively. As part of their Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award journey, students embraced the challenge and built resilience along the way.

On the final day, student leaders were elected to take charge of the voyage home, guiding the crew with confidence, teamwork, and determination despite the conditions.

Sand, saltwater, and a whole lot of teamwork. Year 5 camp was one to remember.

From photo treasure hunts to sandcastle building and paddle boarding, camp life was in full swing from the start. Students embraced every challenge, especially their 'Shark Tank' activity, where teams designed and marketed kite products, blending creativity, problem-solving, budgeting, and big ideas into one exciting task.

A standout moment came as students paused to recognise and encourage peers beyond their usual friendship groups which was a powerful reflection of the respect, courage, and connection built throughout the week.

The camp finished strong with the "Double Decker" challenge, where chants, plank holds, and motivational speeches brought all the energy, teamwork, and Silkwood spirit to the finish line.

Experiences like this are at the heart of Adventure Learning at Silkwood. Stepping beyond the familiar, building resilience, independence, and connection through real-world challenges that help shape who our students are becoming.

A creek, a campfire, and a whole lot of courage. Our Year 3 students headed to Tyalgum for a big milestone: their very first overnight adventure away from school and home.

Every activity asked something of them. A little more courage, a little more trust in themselves and each other. And without fail, they showed up. They tackled archery, soared on the flying fox, made damper over the campfire, and conquered the high ropes.

Standout moments included watching students encourage someone outside their usual friendship group across the high ropes, dig in together when things got tough, or take a breath and try something that scared them. Those are the moments that matter.

Waves, paddles, rafts, and a bus breakdown to kick things off…

Our Year 6 students headed to camp, and they didn’t hold back. Before they'd even arrived, the trip threw its first challenge their way. A bus breakdown on the road could have set the tone for the day. Instead, students handled it with patience, laughter, and took it all in their stride. The perfect warm-up, as it turned out.

Out on the water, they surfed and bodyboarded, earning a 10/10 from their instructors, with every single student giving it a go. They paddled out to a nearby island, tried stand up paddle boarding, and threw themselves into raft building. Most rafts sank. Nobody minded. The laughter said it all.

What stood out most wasn't any single activity, but watching students back a nervous teammate, find a creative solution when things weren't going to plan, and have a crack at something they'd never tried before. That's what camp is really for.

At Silkwood School, we believe the most meaningful growth often happens outside the classroom - in the unplanned moments, the challenges that catch you off guard, and the experiences that remind you what you're truly capable of. And this group showed us exactly that. Students who back themselves, look out for each other, and somehow manage to find the fun in every challenge. Even a sinking raft.

Our Year 12 cohort took on the TreeTop Challenge as part of their Adventure Learning journey. Supported by each other and guided by the belief that growth doesn’t happen inside a comfort zone, they navigated aerial obstacles and zip lines above the canopy. And every single one of them gave it a go.

There were wobbles. There were slips. There were moments where students fell, caught their breath, and climbed straight back up. Not because it was easy, but because that's the kind of young people they are. The kind who don't quit when it gets hard. The kind who look at what just knocked them down and decide to try again.

This is what Adventure Learning looks like at Silkwood. Not manufactured challenge for its own sake, but real experiences that ask real things of young people. Confidence. Resilience. The willingness to try something hard in front of people you care about.

These students are months away from finishing school. This was a reminder of what they're capable of, and the kind of people they're becoming.

Up, up, and up!

As part of their Adventure Learning program, Year 8 and 9 students headed to On Belay Climbing in Burleigh Heads for an indoor rock climbing experience. What they brought back had nothing to do with technique.

Arms shaking, wall looming, teammates cheering from below. The moments that asked more of them than they expected, and the ones who surprised themselves most.

At Silkwood, we believe some of the most important learning happens outside the classroom. In the moments where the next handhold feels just out of reach, where your arms are tired and the top still feels far away. That's where confidence is built. That's where resilience is found. That's where you discover what you're actually capable of.

On that wall, our students found it.

At Silkwood School, learning takes many different shapes, and no two journeys are the same.

Our Virtual Learning students follow the same rich, program as their on-campus peers, built around each child's unique learning plan. And every so often, home comes to campus.

This term, our Virtual Learning community gathered in person for their African Immersion Incursion, bringing their Where in the World unit to life in the most vibrant way possible. Students have been exploring the countries, cultures and landscapes of South America and Africa, with a special focus on South Africa. Today, that curiosity became something they could see, hear, taste and feel.

They moved to African music. They tasted South African food. They painted African sunsets - warm, bold, and completely their own to take home as a reminder of where their learning took them.

As part of the Leadership unit in Year 12, students are challenged to identify a real issue in their community and lead an initiative for change. Some have tackled plastic pollution or food wastage. Kasey chose Youth Crime.

She spent time understanding what drives it, services that exist to support young people, and how she could contribute. The answer? A bake sale to raise funds for PCYC – an organisation running youth programs and support that make a genuine difference in the lives of teenagers across Queensland.

What made the day more than a fundraiser was those who showed up alongside her. Kasey organised two Police Officers to join the Silkwood Senior campus, giving students the chance to ask questions, hear firsthand about work being done in crime prevention, and walk away with a different perspective on law enforcement and the role it plays in supporting young people.

In Year 12 at Silkwood, leadership isn't a theory. It's a challenge. To identify a real issue and lead an initiative for change. Jacob and Lenny chose childhood cancer.

For Jacob, the connection runs deeper than most. As part of his Personal Interest Learning Time (PILT), Jacob is pursuing nursing, and this cause sits close to the heart of why. Together, he and Lenny chose to raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Institute, turning a sausage sizzle into something that genuinely mattered.

On the day, they raised $194, with every dollar going directly toward research, support, and care for children and families facing cancer.

At Silkwood, we measure success not by grades, but in the moments where students choose to show up for something bigger than themselves. We ask our students to care about the world they're stepping into, and find their own way to contribute to it. Jacob and Lenny didn't just care. They acted.

At Silkwood, the Advisory Community Project asks students to find a cause that speaks to them, and turn that care into action. Last year, this group of students chose mental health. Looking beyond the individual to consider the wider impact on families. They connected with the Lavender Unit at Gold Coast University Hospital, a mental health unit supporting patients and their families through some of life's hardest moments.

Inspired by the Unit's family weekend-away program, students wanted families to feel seen. So they got to work, holding a bake sale to raise money, with the Silkwood community getting behind cupcakes, cookies, and brownies. With the funds raised, students researched and hand-picked items for the packages, then came together to pack each one with care.

Today, our Year 11 students headed to Robina Hospital to hand deliver them in person.

At Silkwood, we ask our students to care about the world they're stepping into, and find their own way to contribute to it. This group didn't just raise funds. They turned it into something a family could hold onto on one of the hardest days of their lives.
