Inside Year 9’s Artivism Exhibition

As part of the Year 9 learning program at Silkwood School, students have the opportunity to curate and present a Pop Up Artivism Exhibition - a collection of ideas, perspectives and personal reflections brought to life through art, creativity and purposeful expression.

More than an exhibition of finished pieces, Artivism invites students to explore the issues, experiences and questions that matter most to them personally. Through this process, students are encouraged to think deeply about the world around them and consider how creativity can be used not only to express ideas, but to spark reflection, conversation and understanding.

The artworks showcase journeys of inquiry, experimentation and refinement. Accompanying artist statements provide insight into the thinking behind the work, revealing the themes students choose to explore and why those themes resonate with them. From identity, belonging and mental health, to environmental responsibility, social pressures and the influence of technology, students approach their work from deeply individual perspectives, shaping pieces that reflect both personal meaning and broader global connections.

Throughout the exhibition, students and visitors engage thoughtfully with the space, pausing to read, reflect and connect with the stories and ideas being shared. These moments of curiosity and conversation highlight the power of giving young people authentic opportunities to communicate what matters to them in ways that feel meaningful and real. Experiences like Artivism reflect an important part of learning in The Silkwood Way. Rather than simply learning about issues and ideas, students are encouraged to explore how those issues connect to their own lives, values, questions and understanding of the world. By creating space for student voice, creativity and critical thinking, learning becomes more than the completion of a task - it becomes an opportunity for students to develop perspective, empathy and a stronger sense of who they are and how they might contribute to the world around them.

When young people are trusted with the freedom to think critically, create boldly and communicate authentically, something powerful happens. Learning becomes visible. Ideas become meaningful. And students begin to recognise that their voice, perspective and creativity have the ability to influence and inspire others. Moments like these remind us why we do what we do - nurturing young people who don’t just observe the world around them, but feel empowered to shape it.
