Harmony Festival
Silkwood Harmony and Harvest Festival: A Festival of Diversity and Unity
As we bask in the glow of our Harmony and Harvest Festival, we're moved to celebrate the rich cultural tapestry that is both the heart of our school and the essence of our Australian community. With the mantra "Everyone Belongs," this festival was a vibrant showcase of the diversity that defines us.
In a nation where every second person has roots stretching across oceans, our festival became a mirror reflecting the world's myriad cultures. We had the privilege of hearing from parents originating from countries as varied as South Africa, Ecuador, Indonesia, India, and Brazil, sharing the beauty of their homelands, cultures, and traditions with us all.
A special highlight was witnessing the preparation of a traditional Maori Hangi by our esteemed site staff member, Bola, along with our inquisitive middle schoolers. This traditional cooking method, which involves steaming food under the earth, was not just a culinary demonstration but a profound cultural lesson.
The day was bursting with activities for every year level, from arts and crafts to sports and games, each activity a thread in the vibrant fabric of our festival. Our students expressed the message "Everyone Belongs" through crafts, creating a chain and a colourful tree of diversity, symbolising the unity and interconnectedness of our community.
Adding to this, the entire campus was adorned with flags representing countries from around the globe, transforming our hall into a global village. The festival was bookended with opening and closing ceremonies, offering families a window into the heart of our celebration. The opening ceremony was lifted by the harmonious singing of the Autumn song, setting a tone of togetherness for the day.
A standout initiative was from our Year 12 students, who demonstrated remarkable enterprise spirit by running a sausage bbq stand, engaging the middle school in a delicious fundraising effort. Their dedication was not just about serving tasty treats; it was a heartfelt effort to raise funds for their formal at the year's end. This act of entrepreneurship underscored the spirit of collaboration and support that runs deep in our school community.
As the festival drew to a close, with performances and presentations from our students and the enchanting Maypole dance by our Year 4s, we were reminded of the strength found in diversity and the beauty of coming together as a community.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone who contributed to making the Silkwood Harmony and Harvest Festival an unforgettable celebration of who we are. Through shared experiences, learning, and laughter, we continue to build a community where everyone truly belongs.

To finalise the day, our adorable preps took to the Oval, their enthusiasm and energy a sight to behold. And in a delightful twist, parents joined in the fun, taking part in the last run of the day. This was a beautiful moment of community and joy, encapsulating the spirit of Silkwood in every step.
This Term was a standout day for our Year 8, 9, and 10 students, as they stepped up at the Independent Schools Cup in Carrara. This unique event, gave our students the chance to shine in Volleyball, proudly representing Silkwood.
Our Year 8 and 9 teams shone brightly in the Junior competition, clinching a thrilling final win against Arcadia College. Exploring Real-World Learning at Silkwood Term 1 2024
At Silkwood School, the Real-World Learning Program is an integral part of the curriculum, evolving with students as they grow. Younger students engage with their community to enrich their learning, while those in Middle School seek mentorship to deepen their knowledge in areas they're passionate about. This culminates in the Senior School with the Learning Through Internships (LTIs), where students gain hands-on experience in real workplaces, guided by mentors and supported by their advisors and families, making their learning at Silkwood truly tailored and practical.
Now, let us stroll through some of our students' learning adventures in Term 1. It's a bit like a family album — we're flipping through some snapshots that happened to be caught on camera, but they're by no means the only ones. From our Primary Schoolers stretching their wings with community mentors to our Senior School students getting a taste of the professional world, each story is a unique piece of the Silkwood experience.

The day was packed with learning and exploration. Our students received a grand tour of the facilities and dived into the basics of welding—a skill that's both valuable and empowering. It’s not every day that you get such a hands-on experience, and seeing our students embrace this opportunity was truly inspiring.
We're especially grateful for initiatives like this that strive to boost female representation in industries where they've been historically underrepresented. It’s heartening to see industry leaders like Telwater stepping up and making a difference. Their support in encouraging our young women to explore diverse career paths is commendable.

With an impressive track record of over 100 peer-reviewed journal publications, Kirsten is a globally recognised marine biologist whose work spans from the molecular level to entire ecosystems. Her passion for marine biology and dedication to interdisciplinary research made this workshop an unforgettable experience for our students.
From dissecting fresh oysters to analysing water samples for E-Coli concentrations and exploring exotic samples under the microscope, our students stepped into the shoes of marine biologists and scientists for a day. This hands-on workshop not only enriched their understanding of marine science but also opened their eyes to the exciting career possibilities in the field of science.
A heartfelt thank you to SCU and Professor Kirsten Benkendorff for offering this fantastic opportunity to our students. For those intrigued by the mysteries of marine life and science, we encourage you to explore Kirsten's work more here.
In Year 3, our students delve into the fascinating worlds of The Iron Age Farmers, Hebrews, and ancient China. But learning isn't just about textbooks – it's about immersive experiences that ignite curiosity and spark creativity! This Term, our students embarked on a memorable journey during a fun Clay class.
Inspired by the Hebrew menorah, a symbol rich in cultural significance, our students crafted candle handles. The Menorah's six outer branches represent the six realms of secular knowledge - physics, philosophy, astronomy, medicine, music and mathematics. But the Torah tells us that society cannot rest on knowledge alone.
Through hands-on activities like this, our students not only learn but also have a blast while developing new skills and creating lasting memories. It's moments like these that foster connections, ignite imaginations, and make learning truly unforgettable!
This Term, our Year 1 explorers embarked on a thrilling journey, diving into the fascinating world of minibeasts, thanks to a spectacular incursion with the Wild Rangers!
Our young learners got hands-on experience holding and touching an array of marvellous minibeasts. Their excitement was palpable as they shared laughter and wide-eyed wonder, truly a blend of fun and learning at its best.
The rangers enriched our students' understanding with captivating discussions on natural selection and evolution, along with insights into the unique behaviours of these tiny creatures.
Among the stars of the show were: Lizards, Spiny Leaf Insects that amazed with their camouflage, Giant Burrowing Cockroaches, Rainforest Scorpions, Beetles, Millipedes, Bull Ants and more, each with their own incredible story.
Year 3 students also had an enriching visit from Wild Rangers, perfectly complementing their studies on living things and their recent hands-on projects on "Perfectly Integrated Living Things (PILT) habitats".
This interactive presentation delved into fundamental questions like "What is a living thing?" and "What do living things need to survive?", providing our students with a deep understanding of the vital role both living and non-living elements play in the environment. The session explored various habitats, showcasing how each animal, from lizards and pythons to possums and even a saltwater crocodile, thrives in its unique surroundings.
With the help of our engaging "Habitat Banners", students visually discovered where each animal can be found and the essential elements they need to survive. This hands-on learning experience not only aligns with our Year 3 curriculum, focusing on the lifecycle of animals, but also ties in seamlessly with Year 1's exploration of seasonal changes and Year 6's investigation into how changing conditions affect the growth and survival of living things.
Through this visit, our students gained a richer, more connected understanding of the natural world, reinforcing our commitment to providing learning that resonates with their interests and the real world.
Our Middle School students also had an extraordinary experience right here on campus, with the visit of Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on Wheels. The visit brought the wild to our doorstep with an array of animals, including snakes, lizards, and frogs. Witnessing our students' varied reactions to each creature was fascinating!
It wasn't solely focused on the wildlife; to integrate with our Year 8 Indigenous First Nations studies, the sanctuary team provided a deep dive into the vibrant cultural traditions of our ancestors, unveiling the meanings behind various symbols in Indigenous artwork. This exploration of culture was further enriched by a captivating group activity, during which students expressed narratives of their choice through drawing.
This immersive experience was a vibrant blend of learning and fun, providing our students with a deeper understanding of Indigenous cultures and the importance of preserving our natural world. Moments like these add an extra layer of meaning to our curriculum, enriching our students' educational journey with hands-on, real-world experiences.
A big shoutout to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary for making this memorable day possible!
This Term also marked an important moment for our Senior School, as all students took part in a crucial workshop held by Blurred Minds about Vaping Education. The workshop aimed to shed light on the latest evidence surrounding vaping and its impact on health. But it didn't stop there; the session also peeled back the curtain on the tactics big tobacco companies employ to promote vape usage among young people.
The significance of this incursion cannot be overstated. It’s essential for our students to be armed with factual information and to critically assess the marketing strategies aimed at influencing their choices. By creating an environment where open discussions about health and the strategies used by industries to influence consumer behavior are welcomed, we empower our students to make decisions that are best for their well-being.
This workshop is just one of the many ways we're committed to providing an education that goes beyond traditional learning, addressing real-world issues that impact our students' lives.
A big thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to making this event a meaningful learning experience. Let's continue to support each other in creating a community that prioritises health, awareness, and informed decision-making.

Sarah shared the tools and techniques she employs in her writing, offering a glimpse into the processes that shape her works. Additionally, she took our students on a behind-the-scenes tour of a writer's life, enriched with stories and photographs, providing a comprehensive insight into the creative process.
It was truly unique to witness the excitement of our students as they absorbed Sarah's insights and stories. Their enthusiasm for exploring their own creative paths was palpable, showcasing the inspiring impact of connecting young minds with real-world examples of passion and dedication.

To further enrich this journey, we've invited the wonderfully talented local artist Susy Boyer to join us for an incursion. Susy is guiding our students in developing their final artwork, reflecting their passion and commitment to global issues they’ve researched and felt connected to.
Our students worked in pairs, pouring their creativity into a 1m x 1m wood panel. Their artwork showcases abstract painting techniques, collage, and stencilling, representing a researched issue close to their hearts.
Together, let's support our young artists and activists in making a difference, one artwork at a time!

This visit highlighted our term's exploration, providing our students an immersive experience of Kombumerri traditions, practices, and wisdom. They were introduced to ancient tools and learned about their specific uses, which offered insights into the innovative solutions developed by the Kombumerri ancestors.
Our students didn't just learn about Kombumerri history and the importance of native plants, they experienced it firsthand. They participated in a smoking ceremony, a traditional practice known for its spiritual and physical cleansing benefits. This ceremony, along with the practical experience of creating ink from smashed rocks as traditionally done by the Kombumerri people, and painting their own artworks inspired by this culture, deepened our students' respect and appreciation for the ancient wisdom and traditions of the Kombumerri people.
